Promoting a deeper understanding of patients with diverse cultural and religious backgrounds is an essential component of achieving healthcare equity. The Hospice and Palliative Nurses Foundation (HPNF) has created “on-the-go” online learning resources designed to help busy healthcare professionals gain a broader understanding of the diverse communities they serve.
Working with subject matter experts from the interdisciplinary team, HPNF produced 4 videos which explore fundamental considerations for end-of-life care of patients who identify as Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, or Muslim [bit.ly].
These videos highlight beliefs, rituals, and practices associated with these different faiths. They provide examples and resources on how to engage in conversations with patients and families about their faith-related needs and preferences. Knowledge of faith-specific needs allows nurses and healthcare professionals to create personalized care plans that honor patients’ wishes, leading to a more dignified and respectful end-of-life experience.
